Vital Conversations to Have with your Family about Estate Planning
If your parents are still alive, congratulations- you’ve been granted VIP access to information you will 100% need someday, but will definitely not find written down anywhere.
Go ahead and ask your mom these questions before she “forgets” or “has it somewhere safe” which, spoiler, means no one will ever see it again.
1. Where are the important documents?
And no, “in the drawer” is not an answer. Which drawer? The junk drawer? The fancy drawer? The one filled with coupons from 2004?
2. Do you have a will?
If she says, “Oh, I think so,” that means no. If she says, “Your father knows where it is,” that also means no.
3. What’s the password situation?
Is there a notebook? A spreadsheet? A napkin? Why is the Wi-Fi password 18 characters long but her bank account login still says “fluffycat”?
4. Where is your money actually living?
Do we have savings bonds in a shoebox? Stock certificates in the attic? A mysterious safe deposit box key taped inside the Bible?
5. Do you have any secret stashes I should know about?
Because I promise you, the time to learn that Grandma hid $700 in the freezer behind the peas is not after the funeral.
Bonus Round:
Ask where she keeps her car title.
Ask who her lawyer is.
Ask what subscriptions she’s paying for, because you do not want to be the one canceling QVC Auto-Pay while holding back tears.
None of this is fun. It’s weird. It’s awkward. Blame it on your friend Ali McP from Death & Real Estate that you're even bringing it up in the first place.
But trust me- it’s love in spreadsheet form.
Someday, these conversations will save you hours, dollars, and one massive emotional breakdown at the DMV.
And if you’re already the “responsible one” in your family and you’re thinking, oh God, that’s going to be me, I got you. 💖😘
